Elections in India

Elections in India are a grand democratic exercise, underpinned by a robust constitutional framework. There are primarily two types of elections: Parliamentary, which are held to elect members to the Lok Sabha (House of the People) at the national level, and Assembly elections for the Vidhan Sabhas (Legislative Assemblies) at the state level. The Lok Sabha elections, also known as General Elections, take place every five years, determining the composition of the central government and the Prime Minister. In contrast, Assembly elections decide the state governments and Chief Ministers, with their schedules varying based on the five-year terms of individual state assemblies. Both these elections are overseen by the Election Commission of India, ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
